If each side of these square tiles is 5 inches in length, about how far is it to the towel in the photo? What do you think the little white things sticking up from the tiles that look like addition symbols are?

We estimated that the towel is 38 inches from the edge of the picture. Some of us multiplied 7 tiles x 5 inches = 35 inches. We also noticed that the towel is not near the edge of the tile so we added 3 more inches. It looks like the towel is near the middle of the tile, so we estimated 3 inches. Then we added 35 inches + 3 inches = 38 inches.
Some of us skip counted by 5s. Then we added 3 inches – just like the other kids. We came up with 38 inches too.
We also noticed that the tiles look smaller near the towel. We know that all the tiles are the same size.

I think the towel is about 40 inches total because 8 x 5 = 40. I think the white addition things are white crosses and they help make the tiles straighten up before they put the cement in.
